Mommy and Daddy Wanted to Kill You

Unbelievable story from Secondhand Smoke (read it here). A couple of Australian couples are suing their doctors for not detecting Down’s syndrome in their babies before birth. Why? Because the doctors prevented the parents from having the “freedom” to kill that child in the womb.
Freedom to kill – of course, they didn’t think of it that way. I’m sure these parents justify their selfishness. They probably even tell themselves that they are suing the doctors for their children, arguing that their children would be better off dead than living with Down’s syndrome.
What a self-absorbed mindset! What a low view one must have of human life to think that it should be destroyed whenever it is being lived “less than optimally.” Wesley J. Smith at Secondhand Smoke summarizes it well:
We claim today to be a society steeped in equality and tolerance for differences. But too often, that doesn’t apply to people with cognitive or developmental disabilities. I hope this suit fails because there should be no such thing as a “wrongful life.”
Amen.
