Statement on the House’s Passage of Health Care Reform by Ken Connor

Washington, D.C. – Statement from Ken Connor, Chairman of the Center for a Just Society, in response to the House’s Sunday night passage of the Senate Health Care Bill:

“It was profoundly disappointing to see Representative Stupak abandon his long-standing defense of life at the eleventh hour in this debate. Pro-life Americans are now left to pin their hopes for the protection of the unborn on little more than the word of the most blatantly pro-abortion president in our nation’s history; and if his actions over the last year are any indication, President Obama’s “word” is not to be trusted. The American people were promised a new era of transparency and accountability in Washington but have instead born witness to politics’ worst version of itself. The process that led up to Sunday’s passage of health care “reform” was riddled with unprecedented levels of misdirection, obfuscation, manipulation, and corruption. Had Representative Stupak been truly committed to his role as an advocate for the rights of the unborn, he would not have compromised his position for anything less than specific and robust legislative language recognizing and upholding the precedent of the Hyde Amendment.”
